Frugalista Law | The Frugalista

Frugalista Law

by frugalista on February 27, 2008

Hello. Last night, I had a mini-breakdown because I couldn’t cop Erykah Badu’s new album. Just chalk it up to the stress of not knowing if the ground beef I left out for dinner was spoiled because of Florida’s power outage. For the record, the meat was fine. Being frugal makes you not want to waste anything.

One of my fav readers wondered about my frugalista status. Am I one? Or just one in training? After some soul searching, I realized that I am a frugalista. In celebration, I am creating "The Frugalista Law." I hope readers chime in on what should be some of the rules and regulations. Let’s craft some real legislation. Here are some of my thoughts:

1) Thou shalt not pay to get into the club
2)Thou shalt not dine at a sit-down restaurant more than once a month. If work has you too busy to cook, that job will give you a heart attack.
3) Thou shalt turn off the lights.
4)Thou shalt carry traveling fruit (bananas, apples, etc.) for snacks. Vending machines are the devil.

Ok, those are a few to get us started. I crafted these commandments based upon my weak areas. Suggestions? Chime in. First Frugalista Law, next creating world peace.

A half a tank keeps some money in the bank. When I know I’m going to have a short week of travel, I only fill my car halfway up and that’s enough to get me where I need to go. Then in case I do have to fill up the next week or another time, it won’t be so painful.

When being frugal, Thou shall only associate with frugal-like people. The money throwers in the air(strip clubbers) and the can we go out every-nite-rs(no lifers) are unhealthy for frugualistic(if that’s a word) people. They aren’t prudent individuals. There should be a special kryponite just for those type. When in need, they’re not a friend indeed.

How about giving yourself an occasional treat to the nail and hair salon? I would include thou shalt have one nail and hair salon session per month.
Also, I discovered that when I eat spicy foods, I crave water and not soda. It might be a good tip to add jalapeno peppers to all your foods to avoid ordering costly beverages.

Well kudos to you, I gave up Starbucks for Lent and it falls right in line with the Frugalista challenge, because I have saved $98.49 in 3 weeks, so perhaps:
Thou should be allowed one splurge per month

Thou shalt not purchase $7 sandwiches for lunch.
Thou shalt not buy random crap in the drug store, leaving $30 lighter when you only went in for toothpaste.

How about “thou shalt not skimp”? I think it’s better to spend a little extra on something you really enjoy, then spend more time enjoying it. Instead of indulging a daily chocolate craving, buy one really decadent chocolate truffle and savor it. Instead of shelling out for a mani/pedi, crank up last year’s Erikah Badu cd at home and pamper yourself with the most luxuriant foot scrub your drugstore has to offer.
