Years ago, when I scouted for an apartment, I picked one close to work. I hate commuting. HATE IT. It’s time wasted, energy burned and a money drain. Even if gas were super cheap, long commutes add miles to your car, increasing wear and tear and the need for more maintenance which costs $$! If you all haven’t figured it out by now, I am car adverse. Cars don’t appreciate in value and are costly. Yes, they keep me mobile, but at a pretty hefty price. Did I tell you I spent $63 on gas yesterday? And NO, I don’t drive a truck.
Some days I could telecommute, like when I’m writing a story. But when I need to talk to people in person, telecommuting isn’t an option. Anyhow, blogger and reporter Bridget Carey posted on techie people telecommuting.
Do you telecommute? Did your company suggest it or did you ask for it? Do you get as much work done at home? Would you like to telecommute?

I would love to telecommute, but my present employer said there is no opportunity for that here. I do ask that question when I interview for jobs though….I think every employer would benefit from allowing employees to telecommute at least a few times a year. Although, I do understand some jobs warrant personel to be onsite. But for us desk workers…..what’s the deal?
Lashawn, I am so in agreement. It’s like if you are working at home, you aren’t really working. I say there should be a gas stipend if workers can’t telecommute. Are there any managers out there who won’t let their employees work from home? What’s been your experience? Are they more or less productive.
I do telecommute from time to time, my supervisor once mentioned that I can telecommute once a week if i would like, but sometimes it just doesnt work out. No scratch that, most of the time it does not work out, people want meetings or whatever and it messes up my telecommute. Two people that I know work from home all the time, (except for meetings) and they seem to enjoy it. I get so much work done while working from home because I usually continue working past 5 because I am already home and comfrotable so if I am in the middle of something, why shut down the computer. I happen to have an AWESOME supervisor so telecommuting is possible in my world but it certainly is not encouraged throughout the organization.
I don’t have a telecommute option, but I also find that I have a harder time working from home. I don’t have a desk at home, and my cat looooves to jump up on my computer!
I’d take public transportation, but it would take 2 hours to get to work. I’ve also asked people if they want to commute, but no dice on that so far.
I’m interested in getting a moped, or something like that. It’d take longer to get to work, and I wouldnt want to use it in the rain, but I do wonder if that would help.
Other than that, all I can do is be glad I bought a condo near to where I work!
There’s an LA Times article I read that says people in Los Angeles are driving less. If you’ve been to LA, you know that seems impossible but it’s true, according to CALTRANS. Ridership on buses and trains is up and people are talking about car pooling but, you know, in a city of millions, a few extra thousands on buses and trains is NOT going to make much of a difference on the freeway. It HAS GOT to be more people telecommuting. That’s great, but I have another great idea: A four-day work week. Instant 20-per-cent less commuting for everybody. Now THAT would really show up as less traffic.
Well I am presently working on being a telecommuter. I am raising the last of 9 kids. Two getting ready to graduate from high school, and the other one we’ve got a long way to go. But the idea of working from home is the most exciting thing I can think of at this point. I’ve become rather introverted, and it would be so much easier to just be able to do my work and not have to do that talking smiling thing with my fellow co-workers. Pray for me ya’ll!
Some days I wish I could telecommute…just wake up, turn on my laptop from the comfort of my bed. But then I fear I would turn in to a hermit and would not be social or interact with real, live people on a day to day basis…remember that Sandra Bullock movie.
But I’m lucky…I hop on a subway to get to work so no gas guzzling commute for me.
