Oh my. Delta Airlines is jacking up fees for its passengers carrying more than one bag. When will the madness end? Soon, only the elite will be able to afford a flight. Instead of charging $25 for the second bag, the airline will charge $50. For a third bag, the fee will jump from $80 to $125. Delta is blaming fuel costs. I used to love flying Delta. I mean, they will make you take a layover in Atlanta to go around the corner, but it’s still a nice flight. Southwest Airlines, luckily, doesn’t charge a fee for the first two bags. Here is an earlier post I wrote about skirting luggage fees.
Delta has had a string of bad news this week for passengers. Poor woman.
What do you think about Delta charging high baggage fees? Is Delta trying to stick it to the consumer? Would you stop flying Delta because of the fees? Will you stop traveling because of the high prices? Does Greyhound sound fantastic to you, now?

OMGOODNESS! How angry am I that theses airlines are chanrging for bags! This gas problem is totally getting out of hand! You can’t hop in a car to get places and now when you fly you have to worry about paying an extra fee for your bags! Before you know it we will have to pay to get through security. I have to travel so I will try and choose the airline thats offering the cheapest flight or try to book a trip a couple of months in advance. I HATE THIS NEW POLICY! lol
When I moved from Boston to Cincy last year the cost of flying to most places already got prohibitively high because of Delta. They have nearly all of the flights out of CVG, so they intentionally jack up their prices. I was hoping the merger would mean they’d get rid of the hub here and we could get some JetBlue up in here but no such luck.
Either way, the airlines are ridiculous with the fees and always have been; they’re just as gangster as banks or phone companies charging you fees to “recover” costs that are already built into their base prices. I wish I could pay Delta $80 just to take two pieces of luggage with me. WTF is on their mind.
This is exactly why when I went to Chicago last week, I took the bus.
I’m going to NYC this weekend and I live in Philadelphia. It used to cost me maybe $35 to $40 to drive. Now, with the rising price of gas and tolls, it’s easily $100 – lunch included. I’m looking into taking busses, but that’s so inconvenient because my family lives in Queens. I think travel, like fashion, is reverting back to the days when only the rich could afford it. The jacked up part is that now we’ve all gotten a taste of flying at whim, eating out when we want, driving wherever and wearing designer clothes. Sigh.
Just Wondering-Folks will monetize anything! I hope air will still be free
$- The bus is where it’s at. It was a short ride I’m sure. And, you are reducing your carbon footprint by taking the bus. Smart!
Elizabeth-I TOTALLY agree. What worries me is that my loved ones live in other states. How will these fees impact family relations? Florida is far! You just can’t pick up and drive.
How come the buses aren’t following in line? I’m sure when people start taking buses they will jack up prices!
Am I the only person out there that packs light? I guess I’ve just always traveled with one bag so it doesn’t seem like that big of a deal to me. What are you people taking?
I pack light, cuz the only safe luggage is carry-on luggage. I rarely check bags. When i do , I wind up regretting it because of lost luggage, long lines, or those carousel maniacs.
Every company will try to raise the prices of their services or goods because of fuel. I was in the health food store recently and the guy who delivers the vitamins said oh the prices will be going up because of the gas prices. Everyone is cashing in.
There are certain places that you just can’t drive to so if you really need/want to go then you just have to suck it up and pay the price tag.
YIKES
I live in the country so I usually have to drive an hour and a half to get to a decent airport and then fly. Which I hate, because I’m one of those people who are apparently immune to dramamine or any other medicines meant to ease flying.
So I get to spend lots of extra money and feel like my head is exploding every time I travel. Guess it’s good I have a short commute and cook a lot instead of eating out.
I’ll need that money!
Well why don’t you cry about it. Everything is going up…everything. Here is an idea, pack lighter. Why do you need two or three bags for a trip of five days or less. I guess its easier for me, I’m a carry on one bag and one back pack type of traveler. I’m already checked in and sipping on my first drink while you just picked up your $50 third bag from baggage claim.
Just Wondering-Oh I’m sure they have/will.
Natalie- Packing light is an art, trust.
Coco-You and Natalie could do packing seminars.
PJD-Yeah, folks are playing the fuel card, hard!
Vanessa-Sounds like you have a plan.
HU GUY-I bet you aren’t a fashion slave. I can tell!
Sweet, packing seminars…I feel a blog post coming on.
By the way – are fuel prices dropping in Florida, because they are dropping here! But that doesn’t mean that we should stop conserving!
I was just talking to my BFF about this. We are running out of airlines to fly. Can’t fly Delta if you have more than 1 bag. Can’t fly American if you have to check any bags. Can’t fly US Airways because they charge for drinks.
