Staycation

by frugalista on July 3, 2008

Staycation Yep, the holiday weekend is among us. This time last year, I was hanging out at the Essence Music Festival. I had an awesome time. I saw Beyonce, Mary J. Blige and Frankie Beverly perform. Roaming on the streets of New Orleans was big fun. I won’t tell you more about my trip because what happens in New Orleans, stays in New Orleans!

Alas, that was the pre-frugal me. This Fourth of July, I’m going to my friend’s condo to watch the fireworks from his high-rise balcony. All good. I’m doing what everyone calls a staycation . There are varying kinds. For some, a staycation means entertaining at home, for others it means being a tourist in your home city.  Here’s some audio about staycations.

By staying at home this weekend, I’ll probably save about $700. Yay.

What are your Fourth of July plans? How are you managing your budget this holiday weekend?

staycation! I have to use that word.
I want to drive down to Savannah, Ga but I’m not sure. Going nowhere will definitely save money

We’re going to splurge with a 50-mile drive to Cedar Key for the Clamerica celebration. I’m also free-lancing an item for later publication out of town. So it’s biz & pleasure. Food is $6 or less a plate at this 1-day event. It’s a beautiful place with lots of artsy stuff to gawk and fawn over. No buying, except clams to bring home.

I think mine was a mid-cation. Lol. I drove the two hours home and me, my sister and mom are going to carpool to Essence Fest (an hour away) on Sunday and just drive back after.
After this bloody week in journalism, I really wanted to get away.

I’ve been a bad girl. Travel is my vice so me and 11 of my friends went to Puerto Rico for the week. When I was telling folks I was going out of town and they were saying how jealous they were I said, don’t be. I would actually prefer to stay at home because it would be cheaper. I haven’t been in NYC for 4th of July in sooooo long I would have watched the fireworks.
Don’t be me wrong, I had a GREAT time on my trip and it was cheaper than if I had gone on my own BUT when I think about the costs…let’s just say I’ll be dealing with vacation remorse until I have “paid myself back.”
