I went to a free Jazmine Sullivan concert, recently. I had the night of fun and fabulous frugality planned perfectly. I closet shopped, wearing a raspberry-colored dress I bought this summer for my journalism convention. I wore my favorite rhinestone teardrop hoop earrings. The concert doors opened at 10 p.m. at the Delano Hotel ; so, I arrived around that time. Because it was early for a South Beach night, I found $3 street parking. I made sure to RSVP early for the event, so there was no bouncer drama at the door. I walked right in. Yay! Drinks at this free event were inflated, running in the double digits for even a beer. I swear, establishments get you at the bar. Miss Jazmine didn’t come on until after midnight, but I made a vow not to buy any alcohol. I wanted the night to stay as close to free as possible. Luckily, I met my friend, Brian, at the concert. He bought me one drink, which was kind. When Jazmine finally came on the stage, she did her thing. I enjoyed her crooning. I stood up and started jamming to her song "I Want You Back." And then it happened. Between my grooving, my favorite earring FELL TO THE FLOOR in the dark, packed room. Before my frugality vow, I would have chalked up the lost earring to social game. Earrings, IDs, cell phones are casualties of the night life. But I had NO intentions of buying any new earrings. Acting like a bat, I developed a sonar-like quality, searching for the glistening hoop on the floor. Dark venue be damned! Sure, I might have elbowed a few knees of some folks in the room, but I was a woman on a mission. I needed that earring way more than the Delano did! Buying another pair would have set me back about $20! After about 15 minutes of searching, I found the earring. It was under the table where I was jamming. Whew! Disaster averted.
I walked to my car and drove home. Operation Frugalista accomplished!
