Realhousewivesofatlanta_2
Hello! So, last night was the season finale of my guilty pleasure, The Real Housewives of Atlanta. To say that the series was over-the-top would be an understatement. Cat fights, fashion wars and financial competition were common themes. On the good side, all of the women seemed to be focused on following their dreams such as building their charities or pursuing their creative talents. I blogged about them before, so I wanted to follow up .

Financial updates:

Deshawn Snow: I learned that her hubby Cleveland Cavalier Eric Snow got injured and after more than 10 years in the league and is going into retirement. The couple has just bought a big old estate (yes, it has a hair salon inside) in the suburbs of Atlanta, and Mrs. Snow is not worried about a dime. She says they prepared for the day when her NBA player hubby would have to retire. She’ll be cutting back a bit (no more Mercedes lease) but the family will be fine. Team SNOW! I love to hear about a family planning for the future. I really liked getting to know about her family dynamics this episode.

Lisa Hartwell: She’s married to  Ed Hartwell, who had a fat eight-figure contract with the Atlanta Falcons before getting injured.  He spent the majority of the show in rehab, so he could get picked up by an NFL team. Ed got his wish when the Oakland Raiders picked him up. Lisa has about 3,000 businesses she runs, so when she found out her rehabbing husband got picked up by the Oakland Raiders, she was less than enthused. Lisa thought Oakland was too far and that football is too brutal of a sport. Another part of me thinks that Ed is her #1 employee and she hated the thought of having to hire help. Lisa forever had poor Ed working in the kitchen beading necklaces for her jewelry line.  Beading necklaces/football, it’s all manual labor, Lisa! Ed ends up not lasting long in Oakland, and I guess that’s just fine. Ed seems like a smart guy. He has a bright future ahead of him, and his wife will keep him employed!

Kim Zolciak: Kim is the "housewife" who dated a man dubbed, "Big Papa." The man is never seen but always buys her expensive gifts. I know Kim talked about having a singing career, but she hasn’t recorded an album. I have no idea how she pays her bills, other than by getting support from Big Papa. I hope she gets child support from her daughters’ father. Big Papa breaks up with Kim, we learn. Something about Big Papa makes me think he’s a married man. Just a hunch!

NeNe Leakes: NeNe is seen buying her son a $42,000 truck. Gracious! She didn’t seem extravagant with the spending during the season, so I guess it’s a worthwhile purchase for her family. Her son has just graduated from high school and got good grades. Nice mom!

Sheree Whitfield: Sheree started a fashion line, but it has not done well. The clothing samples are horrible and her staffers stink. Mychael Knight, one of the finalists from Project Runway plays fairy godfather and offers Sheree some business advice: KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE PRODUCT! High five, Mychael! Sheree seems to pride herself on having handlers to jump to her every whim. The only thing is that her "help" always does a horrible job. They take her money and have her looking like a jerk at every event. She had no clothes to show at her fashion line viewing because the seamstress botched the samples. I could sew better clothes than Sheree’s seamstress, and I don’t know how to hem!

I digress.

Did you watch the show? What did you think? Do you think these ladies are handling financial business? Who is your favorite?

How many hours a day do you waste, I mean SPEND, on Facebook?

Carpooling
Recently, BankAtlantic held a "zip code social," an outing so employees can find out who lives near each other. The company wants its workers to ride to work together. While gas prices are down, ($32 to fill up the other day, yippee!) it’s still cheaper if you can cut down on fuel consumption by ridesharing.

I’m not sure if you would want to be that intimate with your coworkers, but maybe it could be worthwhile. If they are great, you can get to bond and save Mother Earth. But if your coworkers are pests…

Here’s a calculator (you know I love calculators) that shows how much you would save if you rideshare to your work place. The numbers are a little bit dated in that calculator, but the figure is pretty good. Here’s a website dedicated to ridesharing.

Do you car pool to work? Do you like it? Is it worth it? How much do you save? Would you do it?

Communion_wafer
Gracious! Police in Jensen Beach, Fla., nabbed a man who tried to run off with communion wafers during a church service. This is just sad! Horrible, even. Honestly, if I were at that church, I would let the man have the wafer. If someone is that desperate for a snack, I say have at it. I would  even say a prayer for them. But the church folks in Jensen Beach are a disciplined bunch. First you let the communion wafers get stolen, and the next thing you know someone is hitting up the members for their gold chains!

What do you think about the communion-wafer caper?  Was the poor man just hungry or just shameless?

Harvard
America’s richest university is having financial trouble. Harvard is reviewing its budget and considering shelving its plans to expand because of the shoddy economy. The university, which has a $37 billion endowment, is worried that it will get less federal funding, so it’s being cautious with its spending.  Also, the stock market may play a factor on how the school’s endowment holds up.  We all know what our retirement accounts/stocks are looking like in ths economy. Harvard is no different.

This is a shame! Harvard always churns out presidents. On a good note, the next president may have to come from this school. hehehe! Bison!

What do you think about Harvard having to mind its budget? Big whoop?  Do you think this is a bad sign for education?

Hello! I hope you had a great Veteran’s Day, remembering those who served our country.  I’m going to be on the WVON: The Talk of Chicago radio at 12:30 today EST. It’s at 11:30 a.m. in Chicago. I’m going to talk about holiday travel tips on the Santita Jackson show. Non-Chicagoans can listen on the stream from WVON’s website: http://www.wvon.com/home.php.

Thanks!

Are you traveling for the holidays? Did you buy your ticket?

Greetings! One of the best things about blogging is all of the fun people you get to meet. I did an interview with Katy Wolk-Stanley, aka, The Non-Consumer Advocate. I always love it when I get to talk to people whose blogs I follow. Stanley’s motto is "use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without." She doesn’t buy new things and has a penchant for finding fabulous things.  Please check out her blog and the interview. I wonder if she is considering making her way to a newsroom…

Do you think you could go a year without buying something new?

Grocery_bag
Hello! I trust you had a great weekend! So, I talked to a college friend of mine the other day. She has a family of four and her grocery bill is $150 per week. I can only imagine. My grocery bill could be lower too. I talked to Mama McNeal (who raised a family of four) about what my friend should do. Her advice? Shop strategically. Saving on groceries isn’t so much about what you buy as HOW you buy. Here are my mom’s tips:

1) Don’t buy your goods at eye level on the grocery store shelves. The food that is above/below eye level is cheaper
2) Buy your meat in bulk and just freeze the unused portions
3) Buy fruits that are in season because they are cheaper
4) Don’t buy bagged salad. Make it yourself
5 Use coupons. (Coupon’s scare me, but Mom’s a big fan.)
6) Wednesday or Thursday papers have the best weekend sales
7) Become a fan of buy one get one free items (I do that for my seasonings and bread.)
8) SHOP WITH A LIST
9) Plan your menu for the week before you go shopping
10) Don’t take hungry children with you (I guess my brother and I drove her crazy at the store with the requests)

Here’s another link I found about strategic grocery shopping.

What is your strategy for grocery shopping? How much do you think you save?

Delta Airlines will charge $15 for the first checked bag. Before, you could get the first bag for free. The new fee starts on Dec. 5. Just an FYI.
