April 2009 Archives

Frugalista Hello! I didn't know it, but found out that I was on NBC-4 in the Washington, D.C, area yesterday. The interview I did with the local Miami channel got picked up by the D.C. station. Yay ! Even though I don't live in that area, I still consider it a home. I graduated from Howard University, so I spent 4.5 years living in Washington, D.C. Please don't ask questions about why it was 4.5 years and not four. Let's just say that college was a blast! :)

So I hold the frugal party here at this blog but you can find me also at twitter.com/frugalista. Also, I would love it if you would join my facebook group, Frugalista. I'm listed as the moderator of  the group.

Are you addicted to social media? What are your favorite sites? Any I should join? Hello, my name is Natalie, and…and… I am an social-media addict.  *whimper*

What's up, frugalistas?!! Baskin Robbins is hawking $.31 scoops at Baskin Robbins today from 5 to 10 p.m.

What's your favorite flavor? I used to be a rainbow sherbet girl, but I need to branch out, right? I'm a little long in the tooth for that.
Thank you, Corene, for the tip,

Silent_auction On Wednesday, Rick Levin & Associates,
Inc. is hosting an auction for the U.S. Treasury at VSE Auction Warehouse,
1173 NW 159th Dr. Registration for the auction begins at 8 a.m. and the auction starts an hour later.

The public may preview the items today from 9 a.m. to noon at the VSE Auction Warehouse.

The auction will feature seized and forfeited personal property including: boats, cars, jewelry and electronics.  Items from washer/dryer to clothing to automobiles will be on the block.  For a complete list for the goods, click here or call the public auction line 888-534-2828.

Money raised at the auction will be returned to government agencies that seized the property.

What would you bid on at an auction? A Rolex? A Mercedes? A washer/dryer? Hmm. Somehow, a washer/dryer doesn't seem that sexy. I bet the washer gets the highest bid! LOL Have you ever attended an auction?

Frugalista Yay! I am super happy about this one. The Frugalista Files was named one of the Top 100 financial planning blogs by OnlineMBAGuide.net. I'm in the "living smart" category. :)

Says Online MBA:

The Frugalista Files: Natalie is a young woman who writes for “The Miami Herald” and the frugal side of fabulous. Learn how to diet, shop, and live on a budget without making any painful sacrifices.

Yep. That would be me. Every time I get some recognition I walk on sunshine. I'm the girl who gets excited when people leave comments, so getting this honor makes me feel great!

Thank you all for reading my blog and getting my lifestyle. It's life changing.

Harlandsanders  The Colonel is serving up free Kentucky "Grilled" Chicken on Monday. Just stop by the restaurant to get the free bird. For more info, click here. BTW, try to ignore the people dancing and eating chicken legs on the website. So unbecoming. I mean, it's not like they can groove like Morris Day and The Time. Bawk!!!!!!!!

Barnes_and_noble_logo Yay! Download nine free audio books from Barnes & Noble. Rejoice!!!

Have a fun, free, frugal and fabulous Friday!

XOXO,

Young-woman-clothes_~dl_k45_0110 I think Time magazine hit a home run with this article.

According to the Journal of Consumer Research, if touch you an item while shopping, you are more likely to buy it. I know for a fact that that's true. If I pick up a dress, inspect it and like it, well, the game is over. I know I'm going to want it in my house. I want the dress to be part of my life. I mean, we touched! Whew. Sorry, I got carried away.  I NEVER try on clothes when I'm shopping. I hate dressing rooms. So I am a sucker for touching and inspecting the clothes on site and making a decision.

So what's a frugalista to do? . Is touching fabric a crime? Am I destined to spend more because I like prowl while shopping? Is it better to stay away from shopping centers?  Are you a toucher? Tell me all about it!

Happy Earth Day! I want to know if you are green. Take this quiz and let me know!

Earth Day is tomorrow, so I thought I'd share this slideshow that Fast Company prepared about green fashion.

Bamboo wedding rings? Who knew?

Have you worn any of the organic fashion lines? I know a lot of the big box stores are carrying green fashions. How are they working out?  Do you prefer to just reuse your clothing and buy thrift?
