Last weekend, I went to the Rum Renaissance Festival down here on Miami Beach. I used to drink rum a little more, but I switched to wine once I found some affordable wines for under $10. However, I picked up some recipes at the festival for mixed rum drinks, and I think I can now make a good bottle of rum last longer! The next time I have friends over, I'll make mixed drinks. Quite honestly, I don't think I'll be bringing a bottle of rum to your party, though.I have to reserve it for my VIP friends! LOL
Here are some *more affordable* rum drink recipes:
Tommy Classic Daiquiri
2 parts Tommy Bahama White Sand Rum
1 part freshly squeezed lime juice
½ part simple syrup
Shake ingredients with crushed ice in a cocktail shaker. Serve straight up in a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a lime wheel.
Tommy-Tini
Tommy Bahama White Sand Rum
Lime Twist
Pour Tommy Bahama White Sand Rum into a shaker with ice. Shake sharply. Strain into a martini glass. Garnish with a twist of lime.
Golden Sun Cuba Libre
1 ¾ parts Tommy Bahama Golden Sun Rum
The juice of 1 lime
Cola
Pour the lime juice and Tommy Bahama Golden Sun Rum into a highball glass filled with ice. Fill glass with cola. Garnish with a wedge of lime.
Tommy Bahama Paradise Punch
2 parts Tommy Bahama Golden Sun Rum
1 part pineapple juice
Splash or orange juice
Mix ingredients in a shaker with ice. Pour into a rocks glass. Garnish with an orange wedge.
What's your favorite mixed drink? Do you like rum? What country makes the best rum? Barbados? Virgin Islands? Puerto Rico?
Edmund L. Andrews, the top economic reporter for "America's paper" faced foreclosure from buying too much house. Gracious! I enjoyed reading his magazine article for the New York Times about the emotional decision making that made him want to buy a half-million dollar home despite having less than $3,000 per month of income after paying child support.
He's laden with bills. However, he has a book deal now from his experience. Perhap's he'll be all right, after all?
Do you feel bad for Mr. Andrews? Do you sympathize? What do you think about people who are facing foreclosure from taking shady loans? Does love make smart people make bad decisions?
Hope you all have a great weekend! I'm going to a Rum Renaissance Festival tasting at the Shore Club on Miami Beach. Yippee! It's all about the tasting! Hiccup! So, I'm wearing a dress I bought a few weeks ago. This blue halter dress is making it's third appearance this season. Different crowds, but the dress is still a three peat. The dress is easy to wash and I only spent $25 on it. Some dresses are made to be worn, a lot. LOL
Do you have a favorite dress that you wear a lot? Is that tacky or cool? Have a fab, frugal and fabulous Friday!
One of my blog peeps, Brandie from FreeSampleFreak.com, has an informative post on free cancer screenings available nationwide in May. Check it out.
Have you ever been screeened for skin cancer?
So, it's no secret that the sun is blaring and I live in the tropics, otherwise known as South Florida. Back in February, I got a sample for
Philosophy's Hope in a Jar creme with spf 20. I love the stuff. I use it on my face. It goes on smooth, moisturizes my flesh and protects me from the sun. I exercise outside quite a bit, so I need a sunscreen that spreads on without leaving nasty white stains.
So, I'm pretty low on the sample, so I figured that I would go to Sephora to buy the real deal. GAH! The jammie is like $18 for a .5 ounce jar. The prices only get better. It's $45 for two ounces. Why me?!!
I really want the sunscreen, but it's too pricey for my budget (right now). I don't want to be a cheapie and hit Sephora up for another freebie. I feel like I've been teased!
I settled for a 3.5 ounce bottle of Burt's Bees suncreen for $15. Sure, it's natural, but I feel like I'm rubbing paste on my flesh. Meh.
When you get a sample, how often do you purchase the product? How many times would you hit up a store for a sample without feeling cheap or guilty? Would you spend $45 on a sunscreen? How often do you splurge? What do you think about my decision to wait to buy it? Do you think I settled?
Oh my! How embarrassing! Platinum-selling rapper Rick Ross was called out by Louis Vuitton for wearing counterfeit sun glasses on the cover of XXL Magazine,
Here's is the letter from Louis Vuitton to XXL :
Dear Editor:
We were dismayed to see the cover of the May 2009 issue of XXL Magazine, which features a photo of Rick Ross wearing a pair of sunglasses prominently featuring counterfeit Louis Vuitton trademarks. Because the photo has generated considerable confusion among your readers and Louis Vuitton customers among others, we feel it is important to clarify several points.
The first is that the sunglasses Mr. Ross is wearing were not made by Louis Vuitton, and in fact, are counterfeit. Louis Vuitton did not grant permission to Mr. Ross or to whoever did make the sunglasses to use our trademarks. The second is that no affiliation, sponsorship or association exists between Rick Ross or XXL and Louis Vuitton. The third is that counterfeiting is illegal.
Thank you for giving us the opportunity to correct the confusion.
Sincerely,
Michael D. Pantalony, Esq.
Louis Vuitton Malletieru
Do you wear fake designer goods? Do you shop on Canal Street in New York? I hate that plastic smell in the stores there. Meh. Rick Ross is signed to Def Jam. Are they not paying that man? I hear that the music industry is suffering. Is the flea market is the only place Ross can afford to shop? Do you think
Ray-Bans would have been a better choice?
Free flavor day at Haagen-Daz from 4 to 8 p.m. today. What's up with all the free ice cream? LOL
Have a great one,
Fruga
Boo! Hiss! Stamps are now $.44, up two cents. I mean, really. I get visions of the pony express when I think about the postal service these days.
Do you use stamps? What do you think of the price increase? Do you pay your bills online? I do!
Happy Friday! I hope you have plans to frolic and play this weekend. I had a pretty active week, so I may behave. Or not.
So, if your mom likes TCBY yogurt, take her there on Mother's Day. I just hope the lines at TCBY are not like the lines at Oprah's chicken bonanza at KFC. I don't think yogurt has the same type of draw as free chicken dinners. *snort*
Also, don't forget to make Mom a free card if you don't want to purchase one.
Have an awesome weekend!
xoxo,
Fruga!
So, I went out last night with one of my really good guy friends. We hit up a "buzz party" for the upcoming American Black Film Festival that's coming in June. The party was at my favorite hotel, The Delano on Miami Beach. So, parking in the garage was one dollar per hour and after 10 p.m. the price doubled. My friend said let's give it two hours. I didn't really think about the parking that much. I just wanted to have fun.
So the party was lovely. I stayed away from the $17 pinot grigios and focused on catching up with old friends and looking cute in my halter dress.
We stayed a little longer than expected and the parking tab ended up being $6, which I think is reasonable. My friend paid but chastised me for being a bad frugalista. Yes, I do hang with a merry band of frugalists. He kept his eye on the clock, but I was having fun. I like a good time, so parking meter be damned.
I mean, gracious! I'm frugal, but I'm not going to go home early over $4 worth of parking. What do you think? Would you cut your night short over parking? Are you a time-conscious person or do you go with the flow?
Did I mention my friend wore Gucci loafers? I guess by being cheap, er, frugal, is how he could afford such a luxury!
