Are women doing better than men in the recession?

by frugalista on August 31, 2009

Girls_rock-362 I ran across an article on CNN.com that says that women are doing better in the recession than our menfolk. How is that for girl power?  Since the recession started in 2007, 80 percent of the people who lost their job were men. One reason women are standing out is because we are better at personal branding (having a clear professional identity), according to the article.

I was a little bit surprised at the article because I know plenty of women who have been laid off. However, I do think that women are very smart about having a "Plan B" and making adjustments.Other reasons cited in the article because industries such auto and construction were hard hit.

Are you surprised by the information? Do you think women are doing better during this recession?

I do think it’s reasonable that women would be doing better in a recession than men. I think that it’s because women are less likely to define themselves based on their jobs. Theoretically, since women historically were paid less than men at similar jobs, we’re also used to doing more with less.
That’s not to say that men aren’t and don’t – just that maybe in a bad situation, one or two things are coming in handy to the ladies.

I agree with GLM, we’ve had to do more with less. I can’t speak for women every where, but many women I know are not only having a “Plan B,” but have a side hustle to make ends meet. That could also add an extra cushion.

@GLM: You make awesome points.
@LaTonya: Yes, I know all about the side hustle.
Thank you, ladies!
