Will ‘Cash for Clunkers’ help the environment?

August 24, 2009 by frugalista divider image

Today is the last day for the government-funded Cash for Clunkers program, where people can trade in their gas guzzlers for new, more fuel-efficent vehicles on discount. ABC ran an interesting story about how the program probably won't help the environment that much. Boo hiss!

What do you think about Cash for Clunkers? Was it "green enough" for you? Do you think it helped the economy? Did you get a new car?

One Response to Will ‘Cash for Clunkers’ help the environment?

  • I don’t think that it helped the economy at all. Since we, the tax payers, paid for people to get a discount, it’s not like the money came out of no where.
Also, I don’t think that it was a good environmental move, since the car engines were destroyes as opposed to scavanged for parts and then recycled.
All in all, I think it was a bad idea. It worked out for people who bought cars, but I don’t think there’s a net gain with this program.
