Miami Spice: How my $35 meal cost me $70!

by frugalista on September 1, 2009

Summer_spice_artwork During the slow tourism months of August and September, high-end restaurants in South Florida offer discounts on three-course meals as part of Miami Spice. You can eat dinner at swanky places like The Fontainebleau, Emeril's or Rosa Mexicano for $35 per plate. Sounds great, right?

So I hung out with my friend Leah and dined at Gotham Steak at The Fontainebleau. To help wash down my corn soup with lumps of crab, miso marinated black cod and warm chocolate bread pudding, I ordered a margarita. Ok, really, I ordered a margarita because I wanted to drink. Food, friends and spirits, right? How often can I get a margarita from a fancy place?  Everything was lovely…and then…and then..THE BILL CAME!

For the two dinners, it was $130!  Gracious! Leah and I ordered drinks. My lovely margarita was $17. I should have known better. Frugalista fail.

Instead of my meal costing me the price of filing up my car tank, I basically ate a month's worth of gas! Seventy dollars covers my electric bill! You get my point.

On the good side, I got to hang out with a friend who I rarely see.

Have you ever had sticker shock at a restaurant? Do you order drinks at a restaurant?
