Large man blames foreclosure on size

December 17, 2009 by frugalista divider image

A Minnesota man says he lost his job because he had an injury as an airline baggage handler and the job blamed his obesity for the incident . Now, Greg Staff is saying because he lost his job, he can’t pay his mortgage and is in foreclosure on his $155,000 townhouse. Staffa launched the website, http://www.becauseimfat.com .

I know I’ve heard of an obesity tax, where health care insurers make overweight people pay more for insurance, but this fat=foreclosure is something new.

Does Staffa have a case? Can you blame your foreclosure on your chubby size? Did Staffa’s employer discriminate against him because he’s tubby?

  • I’m fat, and I’m fat because Ben, Jerry and Little Debbie ROCK!

You honestly can’t blame anyone other than yourself if you’re more than say 30 pounds overweight. If he can’t do the physical tasks of being a baggage handler, he should not be employed as one. It’s part of the job description! In fact, being a baggage handler should be a job that includes some exercise, right?

I mean, what ever happened to personal responsibility?

  • That’s unfortunate. The video, the website – all very touching. But he’s not losing his house because he’s fat. He’s losing his house because he sued his company (and won) and expected to return to work in an easily replaceable position with seniority…like it’s all gravy. But that url would’ve been too long. The day I sue my job is the day I start looking for another one.

The airline was dead wrong and the court agreed. The bank has nothing to do with that. Faulty reasoning at its finest.

  • Doesn’t sound like it ALL Happened because of his weight, but its hard to tell based on what is here.
Never the less, I hope he is not homeless for Christmas. What will the bank be able to do with that house? It will just sit empty. Give the guy a break!
