What do you use to whiten your teeth? Dentist? Toothpaste? Tell me your secrets! I haven’t tried to whiten my teeth, yet. You’d tell me if they looked a mess, right?

Ok, if you are missing my weekly #dealchat on twitter, why is that? I’m not the kind of girl who likes to be alone! We have so much fun sharing ideas on the best techniques and deals around town. It’s even getting noticed. Journalist Chris Nelson who blogs on a Baltimore Sun site wrote a post on #dealchat.

Here are Chris’ beautiful words about #dealchat:
The group discusses ways to save money on travel, entertainment, fashion, food and other goods and services. The first chat took place Feb. 17, and lasted 30 minutes, but that wasn’t enough time for people to share their ways to save money. McNeal says the chats were then extended to an hour. She’s already received feedback from people who have scored discounts on Broadway tickets, learned how to get deals on fashionable duds and, through the help of a travel agent, learned ways to get great deals the next time they travel.

I swear, someone give that guy a raise! Anyway…
The #dealchat last night on gift giving was fabulous. Here is the link to the transcript! Also inspired by the #dealchat fabulous blogger Converting a Spendthrift did a post on affordable gift buying.

Ok, like wow. I am still surprised that the health care reform bill got passed. The debate was so intense between the Democrats and Republicans. And here we are, with it approved in Congress.

Here are some links explaining what it means for you and your money:

1) Washingtonpost.com has an awesome interactive graphic that lets your plug in your information to see how health care reform impacts you. Yay newspapers! :)

Hi Everyone! So we are rolling full steam ahead with #dealchat, a weekly discussion on Twitter to talk about the best ways to find deals.

Hi Frugalistas! So there’s a new twist to the health care bill: student loans! Yep, Democrats are trying to overhaul student loans by taking on some provisions to the never ending health care bills.

From the Wall Street Journal:

The student-loan provisions would end federal subsidies to banks that make college loans and shift lending responsibilities to the government, while also raising federal support for Pell Grants, which benefit lower-income students.

The student loan proposal is expected to save $65 billion over 10 years. Student loans can be a beast.

Would knowing that a student loan provision may be tacked onto the health care bill make you support health care more? Do you think the student loan business needs reforming?

Sephora inside JC Penney is offering a free deluxe sample of Too Faced Lash Injection Mascara. While supplies last! I like this freebie because we are supposed to replace our mascara every three months. Mascara can get a tad costly but it’s so necessary!

Happy saving,
Fruga

Red Pump WidgetHello, my Frugalistas! Today is National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. It’s time for us to take action on the impact of the virus on women and to remind everyone to get tested for HIV.

Every 35 minutes, a woman is diagnosed with HIV. One in four Americans living with HIV is a woman! AIDS is now the leading cause of death for Black women ages 25 to 34. I am in that age and race demographic. Frugalistas, I am NOT happy about those numbers. Ladies, we have to take care of ourselves.

I was asked by one of the funniest bloggers I know, Luvvie to support her serious cause, The Red Pump Project. The project supports HIV/AIDS awareness and today she wants all of us bloggers to rock red pumps in support of National Women and Girls HIV Awareness Day. I’ve seen Luvvie at blogging conferences rocking fierce red heels while the rest of us are in comfortable flats. People ask her where she gets her sexy red heels and she tells them about her HIV awareness project and why she rocks the red heels. Let’s keep the conversations going.

As Frugalistas, there is no reason for us not be more aware of HIV prevention and our own personal status. Don’t be scared to get tested for HIV. I have done it. If the results are negative, like mine, you have peace of mind. If the results are positive, you will be able to get health services sooner rather than later so you can live as healthy as possible.

HERE ARE SOME FINANCIALS REGARDING HIV, TESTING, HEALTH CARE and PREVENTION:

*HIV medicine is rather costly, ranging from $200 to $1,200.

*A 2006 estimate says that over a lifetime, caring for HIV can add 24 years onto your life at $2,100 per month.

*To find out free HIV testing centers in your area, check out HIVtest.org.

*Washington, D.C. is handing out free female condoms.

*If you are in New York, here is a list of places to get free condoms.

*College Frugalistas almost always can get free condoms at the student health centers.

Ok, so let’s take of ourselves, Frugalistas. You matter!

Do you know anyone living with HIV? Do know your status? Are you surprised by the statistics? Are condoms frugal?
