April 2010 Archives

Omg! Puma has found a new way to package its shoes, saving waste and money. It’s official: shoe boxes are overrated! I watched this video and started cackling with glee!

What do you think? Are one of those people who saves shoe boxes? Is Puma doing the right thing?

Wow! We had the best time during last night’s Twitter #dealchat. We chatted about affordable beauty products and techniques, and I was amazed by the responses. Here is the transcript, as promised.

Here are a few items I want to call your attention to from the #dealchat :
1) Estee Lauder has an affordable beauty line Good Skin that most people don’t even know is associated with the high-end cosmetic company. You can find it at Kohl’s. I hear the oil-free moisturizer is nice.
2) There’s an awesome make up sale until Monday at NYX cosmetics. That tip was courtesy of @convertingme on twitter.
3) PromotionalCodes.com has exclusive 50% off ELF cosmetics up to $15. That tip came from @AndreaWoroch
4) Beauty Bloggers Afrobella,Clumps of Mascara, and The Gorgeous Ingredient showed up with some fierce expert tips!!

I hold the #dealchat every Wednesday at 8 p.m. on Twitter. Follow @frugalista and @dealchat for the goods.

How do you save on make up?

Yippee! I’m going to be on The Derrick Ashong Experience at 1: 30 p.m. (est), Saturday. The Derrick Ashong Experience is a radio show that’s all about “socially meaningful media.” You all know, I have a twitter addiction. Remember, #dealchat is tonight at 8 p.m. (est). You love it, right? :)

I’m all about having “the conversation.” It seems that Oprah Radio is ready for a touch of the frugal and fabulous! High five!

You may remember Derrick from a youtube video, that went everywhere (more than a million views) during the 2008 elections.

Anyhow, I’m excited. I hope you listen on Saturday. Watch it live or listen on Sirius 195/XM 156. You know I’m not the kind of girl who likes to be alone! ;)

Frugalistas, I need your strength, help and concern. I’m normally the person who my friends/blog peers turn to to talk about budgets, but today, I need to confess to you all!

After years of doing my finances independently, I signed up to use budgeting website, mint.com. Using the site is like having a money nag, right there in your wallet! Once you connect all of your accounts (credit card, savings, checking, loans) to the site, it takes over your life. Mint.com set me up on a budget and now I am paranoid that I won’t come in under budget for the month of April. I have $189 $76 (my utility bill just cleared) to last me until Friday. It SHOULDN’T be a problem, but I know that mint.com will let me know if I don’t make the cut.

Where I was good (Gold Star): I didn’t spend my $10 allotted for coffee shops and I haven’t shopped for clothes this month. I still have $60 left on my gas budget, and I will have no problem staying under that budget. I still have $67 left in my grocery budget.

Where I was not-so-hot: Mint.com has sent me nasty grams aka “alerts” for going over the cell phone by $72. I have a new cell phone plan that I’m getting used to and I had a few unexpected conference calls, sending me over my minutes. My restaurant budget, well, I’m $20 over it. Bad Frugalista! Bad Frugalista!

So, after going over the restaurant budget, I’ve been cooking like a little chef. I still have money left in the grocery budget and I won’t let this darn personal finance website get the best of me! I’m determined to come in under TOTAL budget this month, even if I blew two categories (cell and restaurant). I will win! I will win! Can’t stop, won’t stop!

I never knew that signing up for a personal finance site would be such an emotional investment. Could there be a method to the madness? I’m already determined to come under budget for May. I’m watching every cell phone call that I make. I’m halfway through my cell phone billing cycle and I’ve only used 60 minutes and I have 450 left. Take that, mint.com!

Anyway, do you use mint.com? What do you think about the “alerts?” How do you manage your budget? Do you use a program? If so, which one? Am I paranoid?

P.S. If you hear a loud scream/howl on Friday, it’s probably because I blew the budget. Send help, immediately. Kthx!

Hello, Frugalistas! I hope you had a good weekend. I spent the weekend grocery shopping, cooking and working. How is that for being fabulous? I have some deadlines to meet, so I will be a bit more social in a little while. You can always find me on twitter and here at thefrugalista.com You just may not see me at a happy hour. ;)

Anyway, I had the pleasure of speaking to an American University graduate student who quoted me in an article on Women and Wealth. I find the topic riveting. For much of my career, I’ve always want to make more money (who doesn’t), but rarely did I think about accumulating wealth. Wealth, in a nutshell, is one’s assets minus the debts. For Frugalistas, it’s not enough to simply earn more cash. You can earn $10,000 more in a year but if you are spending all of the extra income on frivolous things, you are doing nothing to increase your wealth. You can pass wealth on to your offspring. It matters.

I’ve posted quite a bit on NBA players and celebrities who have earned millions of dollars but are hurting financially because they didn’t think in terms of being wealthy. We need to always calculate our net worth to see how we are doing financially. Here’s a calculator to figure out your net worth.

What does wealth mean to you? Have you ever calculated your net worth? Do you think about wealth?

Chello! Here is the #dealchat transcript on romance and finance on the frugal! Last night’s twitter #dealchat was among my favorites since I started the chats. I think we provided a community service to love and personal finance!

Who knew that Frugalistas and Frugalistos could be so romantic?

xo,
Natalie

Being green is a Frugalista’s best friend. Most things that are better for the environment save us money as well. It’s a win-win situation.

Here are some ways to go green to save some green:

1) Use power strips for appliances
2) Unplug my electronics when not in use
3) Replace your incandescent light bulb with a compact fluorescent light bulb. (Remember to recycle the compact florescent light bulb, though. Don’t let it go in a landfill.)
4) Air dry your clothing
5) Only use the dishwasher when it’s full with dishes
6) Don’t throw away your old clothes. Donate to a charity, give to friends or find ways to turn them into cleaning rags
7) Meatless Mondays. Going without meat for one day a week is easier on the environment and vegetables are less costly

How is being eco-friendly good for your wallet? Leave some tips below!

With unemployment numbers at 9.7 percent nationally, a lot of Americans are rethinking some of their career -and college – investments. For many of us, college will be one of our biggest purchases, aside from buying a home.

A factoid from projectstudentdebt.org: In, 2008, 67% of students or 1.4 million students graduating from four-year colleges and universities had student loan debt.

I have long thought that college comes with a lot of “professional expenses,” which often include student loans, networking conferences and expensive suits. I have questioned whether the expenses I’ve had as a professional off set the extra money I’ve earned from having a degree.

Check out the widget below that I found and decide for yourself if college is really worth cash! Leave a comment with your thoughts on the matter!

Ok, this New York woman spends $47,000 a year on her hair, according to the New York Post. The bulk of the expense: a $10,000 weave she puts in her hair three times a year. She gets her hair colored every six weeks for $300 each time. Twice weekly, she gets her hair blown out for $65 each time at the Gemini 14 salon, home of the most expensive extensions in New York city. She also tips the staff at the salon.

This is what the woman, Brandi, told the New York Post:
Without the extensions people say, ‘Well, she’s cute,’ ” she says. “You add all this hair and it puts a ‘Who is she?’ factor on me. Without the hair, I’m this normal average person. But with it, I walk around the corner, and it’s like there’s a wind machine on me. It’s like I’ve stepped off the pages of a centerfold.”

I’m all for looking good and I think her hair looks nice, but $47,000 is more than many newspaper reporters or school teachers make annually! Brandi says she can afford it because of investments that her parents made.

I think she’s over the top because she’s spending money her parents gave her. I doubt her family made the money that they have splurging on high-maintenance hair. My stylist in Miami does a full sew-in weave for $500, including hair.

I think I am in the wrong profession. I just hope Brandi isn’t one of those women with $47,000 hair and no furniture in her home. That, would be tre tacky.

How much do you spend on your hair? How much would you pay for a great style? Do you think this woman has a problem? Do you like her hair?
