Woman spends $47,000 on hair

by frugalista on April 20, 2010

Ok, this New York woman spends $47,000 a year on her hair, according to the New York Post. The bulk of the expense: a $10,000 weave she puts in her hair three times a year. She gets her hair colored every six weeks for $300 each time. Twice weekly, she gets her hair blown out for $65 each time at the Gemini 14 salon, home of the most expensive extensions in New York city. She also tips the staff at the salon.

This is what the woman, Brandi, told the New York Post:
Without the extensions people say, ‘Well, she’s cute,’ ” she says. “You add all this hair and it puts a ‘Who is she?’ factor on me. Without the hair, I’m this normal average person. But with it, I walk around the corner, and it’s like there’s a wind machine on me. It’s like I’ve stepped off the pages of a centerfold.”

I’m all for looking good and I think her hair looks nice, but $47,000 is more than many newspaper reporters or school teachers make annually! Brandi says she can afford it because of investments that her parents made.

I think she’s over the top because she’s spending money her parents gave her. I doubt her family made the money that they have splurging on high-maintenance hair. My stylist in Miami does a full sew-in weave for $500, including hair.

I think I am in the wrong profession. I just hope Brandi isn’t one of those women with $47,000 hair and no furniture in her home. That, would be tre tacky.

How much do you spend on your hair? How much would you pay for a great style? Do you think this woman has a problem? Do you like her hair?

15 bucks, goatee and tip included. And I ain’t trying to pay much more than that no matter how great the fade is. $20 is highway robbery!! I am unimpressed with her hair. For that much money the hair oughta maintain itself. The next stylist she should ever have to see should work at a funeral home.

OK, so, this hair does itself, right? It has to. $47K?! What does she do?!

@steve: I thought the hair was decent, but on second look, it’s got the Barbie appeal. And you have a serious deal on your hair care. Men get all the breaks!
@Smarty: I think she’s a trust fund baby. Some of her tresses may tangle themselves. Her hair doesn’t mow the lawn or do taxes or anything.
@Freddie: She has hair down to her shoulders, but it doesn’t have that vixen appeal. I’m starting to think she’s just bored with herself.

$10K for a hair weave? Really?

Woman needs something to do with her time, like maybe giving to a charity? Or am I reaching too much?

1st of all I am still rubbing my eyes to believe what I read and then I had to re-read it several times to understand it.
I go to the hair salon every 2-3 weeks at approx. $35-$55 a visit; (i just did a rough estimate of my annual hair maintenance budget and we are looking at $960 – $1440 annually). I spend approx. 2% of her cost and still at times I feel it is too much….WOW! and WOW!

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and if she feels better about herself with her hair extensions then all the power to her, and let her be. It’s her money (no matter where it comes from), her self image, her peace and happiness within and outside herself.

This morning I received a call from a client I applied 250 20″ European hair to this past weekend, who called to let me know how pleased she is with her new hair and still can’t believe it’s herself every time she passes a mirror. Prior to her application she had hair similar (in cut and style) to the woman in the above photos, with the exception of my client’s hair being rich natural browns. My client is adorable to begin with, but with a mane of high quality hair she became an absolute stunner and when her husband picked her up he was in happy utter disbelief. It was precious. Was it affordable? That all depends on what your budget permits.

The key to stunning extensions is creating a natural look with QUALITY hair. Simply because hair is expensive does not make it quality.

She must have a boat load of that middle east Oil money flowing to her bank account. So much for being a Savvy Shopper like me who has to go to MyCrumb.net to get every discount and Cash Back under the sun. I’m Trying to get there Girl!! I’ll have my day but probably not like that.
