Teresa Giudice and Real Housewives of New Jersey

June 9, 2010 by frugalista divider image

So, if any of you follow my twitter feed, you know I have a mild obsession with Bravo’s “Real Housewives” programming. When I found out that Teresa, one of my faves on the Real Housewives of New Jersey, filed for bankruptcy I wasn’t surprised. Her hubby is involved in construction/real estate, and I know that industry isn’t doing the best. Furthermore, the woman treats shopping like a sport. Her four kiddies look like living dolls. I mean, Teresa’s newborn had a fly new hat on in the delivery room!

From the NY Daily News:
The reality show couple reportedly filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Newark, N.J., last October. According to court documents, the couple owes $10.85 million to creditors.

In addition to $8.7 million in liabilities, they also are behind $2.6 million in mortgages on their three homes, including the family’s $1.7 million mansion in Towaco, N.J., that is featured on the Bravo reality show.

Yikes. Her Skinny Italian book is selling well, but the publishing industry doesn’t put new authors into retirement.

I really hope Teresa becomes a Frugalista super quick. She buys some nice stuff. I know she could sell a lot of her stuff to consignment shops and make enough to feed a village. If she put some of those LV bags on eBay, she’d so make a killing! Also, if she held a garage sale, I think it would be worth it for me to fly up to New Jersey just for her jewelry. :) She already is a great cook, so that’s frugal.

At least with the bankruptcy she’ll get a fresh start. I hope she stays away from the malls, boutiques, and avenues. Oh yes, and the plastic surgeon, too. She doesn’t need it.

Go, Teresa and Joe!

So what do you think about the Teresa and her hubby being millions in debt? A lot of the Bravo Housewives are having financial trouble. Is it something in the water or a sign of the times? Do you think Teresa can turn it around? I think so! Can you see Teresa shopping at an off price store?

  • I hope everything works out for them. I don’t know what it is with the Bravo Housewives. Maybe they are scared it would hurt their image if they “kept it real” and told everyone they were having financial problems. I respect Jeana and Tamra (OC) for admitting the economy had gotten the best of them and they needed to make changes.

  • Like you, I am not at all surprised. She seems (and I know it’s “reality” TV) to have a very flippant relationship with money and that will always lead straight to the poorhouse when the income stream is turned off. I do hope she recovers but I worry about her keeping up appearances now that she’s a Bravo “celebrity”. According to reports they barely bring in $200,000 so they will have to drastically alter their lifestyles. Now $200K is a handsome salary and most people would get along fine on that, but again they are into appearances (or appear to be). I hope their children will not follow in their dangerous footsteps.

  • @karen: I think that Bravo picks certain personalities who are over the top. It makes for good TV, but doesn’t always pay the bills. And out of all the housewives, it seems like Jeana and Tamra owned up to it the most. Some of the other wives were like, oh we just left our multi-million dollar home to live in the bush. We aren’t broke.

@Tameika: I wonder. I’m glad her book is about cooking and not the fabulous life. If she keeps down the cooking/family path, she can work her way out of this mess. Well, with that and having her debts forgiven by bankruptcy!

  • Money does not buy class. Her actions are teaching her children that appearances and vanity are all that matter. Her attitude is revolting and what’s sad is that she truly doesn’t know it. It’s obvious that they think their behavior and attitudes are acceptable. I can only conclude that this is because they are surrounded by people who think the same way. I wouldn’t want to live in New Jersey.

Teresa really is a deadbeat. She kept saying she had class—yea–real class as a deadbeat. She took her children into a store to show off to the viewers that she could buy them whatever they wanted & they pulled stuff off the hooks–and it makes you wonder if the deadbeat paid for the stuff she took for them. I guess she would make a commedian with her line about how much class she has. Does that mean everyone that dosen’t pay their bills has class ?????

  • They are complete idiots. They are similar to most Americans in our “have it now” society, but the levels they go to are extreme. 11 million in debt???? Disgraceful.
