Could you live off coupons for a year?

by frugalista on October 3, 2010

Gracious! Have you heard about the man who is living on coupons for a year? As part of a promotion for Groupon, a deal-of-the-day website, Chicagoan Josh Stevens, is living off coupons from the company for a year. If he completes the challenge, he’ll win $100,000. Nice.

According to CNN.com:
Under the Chicago-based company’s challenge launched in May, Stevens can’t use or even touch money, but he’s equipped with a laptop and online coupons that can be used for lodging, dining and shopping.

At first, I was shocked at the challenge, and then I was inspired. As a full-time Frugalista, I am always looking for the best deals. I regularly look for coupons when shopping online.

With proper practice, you can save hundreds per year by using coupons. Still, I don’t have as much time to look for coupons like I should. I mean, I work a lot.

What do you think? Could you live off coupons for a year? Does coupon clipping take up too much time? Are coupons sexy? Do you need to step up your coupon game?

WOW live off coupons for a year.. I would need to get more savvy I think! I am a coupon lover, but we don’t have a lot of local stores so Target and CVS and stuff aren’t in my range to shop. If they were I think it would be a bit easier! I don’t feel that cutting coupons is much of a chore, it only takes me like 10 minutes to cut the ones I want! I am all for Coupons :-)

I think coupons are sexy and savvy. Saving is also sexy and savvy. Therefore clipping coupons isn’t a bad idea afterall. This challenge sounds challenging but I would definitively do it.

I definitely need to step up my coupon game. I wish this guy the best of luck. If he can go without spending a dime for a year, he deserves that prize.

I have been using coupons for EVERYTHING for a few years now( waaay before the recession and way bf people thought it was cool).
It has afforded me a lifestyle that I want and may not have afforded if I shopped haphazzardly. It has become so addictive that I will not buy anything unless it is on sales AND coupon

I wish I could live off coupons – that would be amazing! I would pay someone to teach me to be a good couponer if I meant I would end up saving in the long run!

I took a look at Groupon, and the coupons I saw all required the addition of cash. Am I missing something?
