OMG! I have young professional friends who routinely use Airbnb to get affordable housing when traveling. It’s a neat service that allows people to rent a room from a personal home or allows a host to rent out his or her home to travelers. It seems like a great way to save money when traveling and to make money with your home. But according to a New York Times article, people who are hosting travelers are getting in trouble with their landlords for breaking the rules of their leases. One man quoted in the article got cited for fines potentially worth $40,000. Crazy!!! Some landlords have rules against short-term rentals.
This article is so important because as Frugalistas and Frugalistos, we love making and saving money. But if we don’t think about reading the fine print, those “deals” or money-making ventures we enter, may really be nightmares. True, Airbnb warns that users shouldn’t break any laws in order to rent out their spaces. Most of us just don’t think that we’d get fined that much for a renting out a room! Good lesson to learn!
